Oral History Interview, Judith Leavitt (2552)
Abstract
In her August 2025 interview with Edwin Elizabeth Thomas, Judith Leavitt discusses her 50-year career in the Gender & Women’s Studies (GWS) Department at UW-Madison. She was a founding member of the program in 1975 and recalls experiences of pitching the program to the university curriculum committee, mentioning important colleagues who helped to create GWS along with her. Leavitt remarks that although there were risks in pursuing the field, especially when it was brand new, it was also very exciting and rewarding to be part of it. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the GWS @ 50 Oral History Project of the UW-Madison Archives & Records Management oral history collection.
