    Abstract
In her August 2025 interview with Edwin Elizabeth Thomas, Virginia Sapiro discusses her longtime role in UW-Madison’s Gender & Women’s Studies (GWS) Department. She started as a member of the first tenure-track faculty cohort in 1976, the year after the program was founded. Sapiro stayed at the university until 2007, working as a professor as well as associate chair and chair of the GWS Department. She speaks about how she originally became interested in GWS and how the field has evolved at UW-Madison and across the country during her tenure. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the GWS @ 50 Oral History Project of the UW-Madison Archives & Records Management oral history collection.
