Lying in the extreme northwest section of the State of Wisconsin is Douglas County (1970
population of 44,657) and its principle city, Superior (1970 population of 32,202). Major
employees located within the city of Superior are Fraser Shipyards, Inc., Murphy Oil
Corporation, Superior Fiber Products, Peavey Flour Company and the railroads, all of which are
financially dependent upon the Port of Superior (refer to map next page). This port, in turn, is
part of the larger Duluth-Superior port, which serves as the terminus, or "head of the lakes"
of the Saint Lawrence Seaway System.
