Interns encounter unique challenges when moving into permanent positions, such as adapting to
new responsibilities, understanding organizational culture, and developing professional skills.
This study examined the knowledge and skill development gaps faced by interns transitioning to
full-time roles across various industries, seeking to inform targeted interventions and improve
student internship outcomes. Despite the prevalence of internships, research on optimizing these
programs for better full-time role preparation is limited. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the
study collects data through a comprehensive survey distributed to former student interns who
transitioned to full-time roles within the past 10 years. The survey includes multiple-choice,
agree/disagree, and short answer questions, focusing on training adequacy, role clarity, and
organizational support. Descriptive statistics, along with qualitative analysis, were used to
identify common trends and specific challenges faced. The findings will contribute to enhancing
early talent development programs, providing organizations and educational institutions with
insights to tailor their approaches. By understanding the specific needs of interns, organizations
can develop more effective onboarding and continuous professional development initiatives,
improving the transition experience and enhancing long-term career prospects and retention
rates.
