Oral History Interview, Michael Schatzberg (1364)
Abstract
In his October 2013 interview with Tom Spear, Michael Schatzberg reflects on his graduate and professional career studying African politics from the late 1960s to 2013. He chronicled how service in the Peace Corps initially generated his interest in West Africa and encouraged him to study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and detailed his research projects throughout several decades of his career. In addition to the Peace Corps, Schatzberg discusses key individuals in his intellectual development, his views on political science methodology, the development of African Studies at UW, the relationship between African politics and American political science, and his views on education. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW-Madison Oral History Program.
