OPTIMIZING YIELD FROM WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR COMMERICAL FISHERIES THROUGH SMELT STOCK ASSESSMENT
Abstract
Acoustical and net sampling was conducted throughout western Lake Superior during 1978-1980 to
obtain information on rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) abundance, the factors controlling smelt
abundance and the influence of smelt predation on lake herring (Coregonus artedii) abundance. Effectiveness of midwater
trawling systems in capturing commercial quantities of smelt was also tested. The objectives of the study were to provide information on the stocks and fishing techniques required to optimize yields of the western Lake Superior commercial fishery.
