The TRIO McNair Scholars Program began at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the fall of 1999. The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO program originally established in 1986 by the U.S. Department of Education, with 187 currently funded programs nationwide with nine programs housed within the UW System. The Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program (TRIO McNair Scholars Program) at the University of Wisconsin-Superior prepares income eligible, first generation college students and students from groups underrepresented in graduate education for doctoral study by providing transformative research experiences, exceptional mentorship, and intentional professional & personal development. The University of Wisconsin-Superior TRIO McNair Scholars Program serves students from three different institutions within the region, including Northland College, University of Minnesota-Duluth, and University of Wisconsin-Superior.
