    Abstract
Physical and chemical characteristics of water may affect the biological avail ability and toxicity of chemicals in aquatic environments. Hardness, alkalinity, pH, dissolved organic matter, and suspended materials have been shown to affect toxicity of certain chemicals. Other factors may also influence chemical toxicity, such as seasonality and its resultant impact upon stream flow and composition of the biological community.
