Final Report to the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District on the Effects of Insect Control Agents, S-Methoprene and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, to Certain Aquatic Organisms
Abstract
The use of pest control agents involves risk to other organisms in the same habitat. Control of aquatic dipteran pests, such as mosquitoes and black flies, may involve exposure of non-target aquatic species. The Center for Lake Superior Environmental Studies of the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Superior, WI was contracted by the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) to expose five species of organisms to two control agents. The cladoceran, Daphnia pulex, and leopard frog, Rana pipiens, were exposed to s-methoprene, a juvenile hormone mimic. Both species were exposed in short-term acute, and longer-term life-cycle tests.
