Most studies on the toxicity of aluminum (Al) to aquatic life have been conducted in acidic waters, due to concerns centered around surface water acidification. Fewer studies have been conducted in waters of neutral of alkaline pH. The present study was undertaken to generate ·Al toxicity information on several freshwater plant and animal, taxa at neutral pH or in slightly alkaline waters. The purpose of this work was to provide a broader
taxonomic base for the development of Al criteria designed to protect aquatic life in
situations where Al may be discharged into such waters.
