IMPORTANCE OF THE BOIS BRULE RIVER TO THE RECENT SEDIMENTAION HISTORY OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR
Abstract
As part of an interdisciplinary survey of Douglas County, Wis., and under the auspices of the
University of Wisconsin Water Resources Center, the Bois Brule was singled out for a geological
analysis of material constituting its bed and suspended load, In addition, bedrock and glacial
deposits were mapped throughout the drainage basin. These investigations were initiated to better
understand the statistical characteristics of the elastic material being transported by this
stream and its contribution to the Holocene sedimentation history of the Wisconsin shoreline of Lake Superior. The Bois Brule was selected .for study due to its lack of perturbation, its inverted long-profile, its large drainage area, and because in. other respects it is quite typical of the dozen or more streams that constitute the Wisconsin portion of the Lake
Superior drainage basin.
