| dc.description.abstract | Diverse teaching methods have been used in English classrooms of Korea to enhance students' academic proficiency. In spite of English education reform, students are not encouraged to express their ideas spontaneously and critically. Teachers have been leaders of class and students have been receivers of the instruction, so improving creativity or critical literacy in English classes has been neglected in Korean English education. However, the global competition and demand of practical English education have influenced a changed perspective to the Ministry of English education, teachers, and parents, and they consider English newspapers are the best resource to teach all the requirements in this era. In my paper, I have demonstrated on how critical literacy can be applied to EFL classroom through English newspaper articles because they are "living English" and rich resources of developing critical perspectives by students' active reading and their voluntary involvement. Critical literacy class requires active reading behavior toward students themselves and the content as well. I have chosen several activities from Shaw, which can be actively utilized in critical literacy class, and I have designed its application as editorial writing through learning argumentative elements and writing style.
Teacher's role in critical literacy class is to be a facilitator, supporter, and encourager because students must take initiatives to develop their critical skills. The techniques that I have suggested in this paper will help teachers and students to increase critical viewpoints and will provide satisfactory results to them. | en |
