Young-of-the-year fishes in the main channel island environment of the upper Mississippi River were examined to determine critical biotic and abiotic factors that influence their distributions. A main channel island complex was selected for study because it offered a continuum of various suspected microhabitat factors. Fish were collected from eight sites around Dakota Island, Pool 7, by bag seine on three consecutive days every other week, from May 19 to October 15, 1987.en
